Display and preservation pull in different directions. Light and heat are what fade a card, and both come with putting it on a shelf, so the goal is a display setup that limits the exposure rather than one that ignores it.
Light is the enemy
Direct sun will visibly fade a card within months. An interior wall away from windows, or a cabinet with a door, buys years.
Group by theme, not by value
A shelf of one archetype, artist or set reads far better than a row of unrelated expensive cards, and it makes the display something you can keep adding to.
Labels finish the piece
